See inside a furnace

Inside the box in your basement

Take a furnace apart with us.

Most people have never seen inside their furnace. Scroll, and we'll show you what we check on every visit, and how one set of ducts heats your house in January and cools it in July.

  1. Doors off

A high-efficiency gas furnace has seven parts that matter. On every tune-up we take the doors off and check each one.

    1. Condensing heat exchanger
    2. Primary heat exchanger
    3. Burners and gas valve
    4. Inducer fan
    5. Control board
    6. Variable-speed blower
    7. Filter
  2. Flame on

The inducer fan clears the exhaust, the igniter glows and the gas lights blue. The flame heats the heat exchanger, never the air you breathe.

  3. Heat on

The blower pushes warm air up the ducts to every room. Cooler air comes back through the return to be filtered and heated again.

  4. Season change

In June you turn the thermostat from heat to cool. The same ducts and the same blower now carry cool air.

  5. Cool on

The heat pump outside spins up and carries heat out of your house. In winter the same unit runs in reverse and helps your furnace.

5°C and colder

Furnace weather.

On a cold night your furnace can run 20 minutes of every hour. If it stops, call (905) 555-0191 at any hour. While you wait, check that the filter isn't clogged, make sure the switch beside the furnace is on, and keep inside doors open.

Tune-up weather.

Nothing is working hard right now, which makes it the best time to service your furnace or air conditioner before the next season. Spring and fall slots fill up fast, so book a few weeks ahead.

22°C and warmer

AC weather.

On a 33 degree afternoon a healthy central air system should still hold the temperature you set. If yours runs but the house keeps warming up, check the filter and clear anything blocking the outdoor unit, then call us.

How a visit works

One technician, one written price, no surprises.

  1. We answer.

A person answers the phone, day or night. Booked visits get a two-hour arrival window, and we text you when the technician is on the way.

  2. We find the problem.

The technician tests the system, shows you what's wrong and writes up the price before any work starts.

  3. We fix it and test it.

Most repairs are done on the first visit. We run a full cycle with you watching and check the carbon monoxide reading.

  4. We clean up.

Old parts leave with us, and you get a short report with photos by text message.

Thinking about a heat pump?

One outdoor unit for both seasons.

A cold-climate heat pump heats your house down to about −25°C and cools it all summer. Most of the ones we install in Peel and Halton work alongside the gas furnace, which takes over on the coldest nights.

  • Heats down to about −25°C
  • Replaces your central air
  • Works with your furnace as dual fuel

Reviews

What people said after the visit.

4.7Average of the three reviews below, out of 5.

  • Our furnace quit at 11 at night in January with two kids in the house. The person on the phone walked me through checking the filter, then sent a technician who had it running by 1 am. The after-hours fee was explained before anyone drove over.

    Daniela, Brampton
  • We got three quotes for a heat pump. Ember and Frost was the only company that measured the house and showed us the running costs both ways. They kept our furnace as backup, and the install crew left the basement cleaner than they found it.

    Raj, Oakville
  • The spring AC tune-up found a weak capacitor before it failed in July, which saved us a hot weekend. Booking took two tries because the online slots were full, but the office called back the same day.

    Helen, Etobicoke

Questions

Questions people ask us.

Something else on your mind? Call (905) 555-0191 and ask whoever picks up.

Are there rebates for a new heat pump or furnace?

Often, yes, but they change. Federal, provincial and utility programs for heat pumps, insulation and smart thermostats open, change and close from year to year, and most need an energy assessment or paperwork from a licensed contractor. Before we quote, we check which programs are open for your home and equipment that month, and we fill in the contractor part of the forms. We never build a quote around a rebate we haven't confirmed.

Should I get a heat pump or a new furnace?

It depends on your house, your ducts and what you pay for gas and electricity. A cold-climate heat pump heats and cools with one outdoor unit and keeps working down to about −25°C, but most homes in Peel and Halton keep a gas furnace as backup for the coldest nights. That setup is called dual fuel. If your furnace is less than 10 years old, replacing your air conditioner with a heat pump is often the simplest start. We show you the running costs both ways before you decide.

How often should I change my furnace filter?

Check it once a month during heating and cooling season. A standard 1 inch filter usually needs changing every one to three months, and a 4 or 5 inch media filter every six to twelve months. Change it sooner if you have pets, a renovation going on or someone with allergies. A clogged filter makes the system work harder and can make the furnace shut itself off.

Do you offer financing?

Yes. For new furnaces, air conditioners and heat pumps we offer monthly payments through a third-party lender, subject to credit approval. We write the monthly amount, the term and the total cost next to the cash price, so you can compare them side by side. You can pay the balance off early without a penalty.

Do you take emergency calls at night?

Yes. Our no-heat and no-cool line at (905) 555-0191 is answered 24 hours a day, every day. Visits between 8 pm and 7 am, and on Sundays and holidays, have a $120 after-hours fee, and we tell you about it on the phone before we send anyone. If you smell gas, leave the house first and call 911 or your gas utility from outside.

How long does a furnace or AC installation take?

Most furnace or air conditioner replacements take one day, and you'll have heat or cooling again before we leave. A heat pump takes one to two days, depending on where the outdoor unit goes and whether your electrical panel needs work. We handle the permit and book the inspection.
