Water comes in from the city main, through the shut-off valve and the meter.

Then a fitting in the basement ceiling lets go.

If a pipe bursts

Water on the floor? Here's what to do while we drive over.

Call us first at (905) 555-0187 so we can get a truck moving. Someone picks up at any hour, and they'll stay on the line while you find the shut-off if you want the help.

These four steps are printed on the yellow tag we hang on the main valve in every house we work in. If we've been to your place before, look for it in the basement.

If water is coming in

Do these in order. It takes about five minutes.

  1. Turn off the main water valve.

It's usually on the basement wall that faces the street, near the water meter.

Lever handle: a quarter turn, so it sits across the pipe.
Round handle: clockwise until it stops. Don't force it with a wrench.
  2. Keep away from wet outlets.

If you can reach the breaker panel from a dry floor, switch off the basement circuits. If you can't, leave it alone and tell us when you call.

  3. Drain what's left in the pipes.

Open the lowest tap in the house, like a laundry tub or basement sink, and let it run until it stops.

  4. Take photos before you clean up.

Your insurance company will ask for pictures of the leak and anything that got wet. After that, lift boxes and rugs off the floor.

New copper through an old plaster wall. We patch the opening before we leave. Old brass and galvanized fittings, like the one on the right, are the usual culprits in pre-1960 Hamilton houses.

How a visit works

What happens after you call

Doug Weir started the company in 1991. His daughters Fiona and Kate run it now, and one of them answers most of the calls during the day.

  1. You talk to a person

After 8 pm, the call goes to whichever of our techs is on call that night. For a booked visit you get a two-hour arrival window. For an emergency we give you a rough arrival time and call if it changes.

  2. We text you when the tech leaves

The text has the tech's name and the van number, so you know who's at the door.

  3. You get the price in writing first

The tech finds the problem, explains it in plain terms and writes up the price. If you'd rather not go ahead, you pay the $89 visit fee and that's the end of it.

  4. We test the work and clean up

Drop sheets go down before we start, and the old parts leave with us. Before we go, we run the system while you watch. Repairs come with a one year warranty on labour.

Reviews

What customers told us

4.7out of 5, the average of the three reviews below

  • Our basement floor drain backed up on a Sunday night. The tech got here in about an hour and showed us the tree roots on the camera after he cleared it. He didn't try to sell us a new sewer line, and the Sunday fee was explained on the phone, so the bill wasn't a surprise.

    Priya, Ancaster
  • We called about our water heater on a Tuesday and had a new tank in by Wednesday afternoon. The written quote and the final bill were the same number, and they took the old tank away.

    Mark, Stoney Creek
  • Our furnace quit on a cold morning in January and they had it running again by early afternoon with a new igniter. It took a while to get through on the phone that morning, but Kate called back within 20 minutes.

Questions

Questions homeowners ask us

Something else on your mind? Call (905) 555-0187 and ask whoever picks up.

Where is my main water shut-off valve?

In most Hamilton houses it's in the basement, on the wall that faces the street, close to the water meter and a foot or two above the floor. In older homes in the lower city it's sometimes under the basement stairs or behind a panel in a finished wall. If you can't find yours, ask us at your next visit and we'll tag it for you.

Do you charge more for nights and weekends?

Yes. Visits between 8 pm and 7 am, and on Sundays and holidays, have a $125 after-hours fee on top of the regular price. We tell you this on the phone before we send anyone, so you can decide whether it can wait until morning. Saturday daytime visits are charged at regular rates.

How long does a water heater replacement take?

A tank swap usually takes three to four hours, so you'll have hot water again by the evening. A tankless install takes most of a day because we run new venting and often a larger gas line. We take the old tank away either way.

My water heater is a rental. Can you still help?

If you rent your tank, the rental company owns it and has to repair it, so call them first. If you'd like to stop renting and own your water heater, we can quote a replacement and arrange the return of the rental tank. Check your rental agreement for a buyout charge before you decide.

Does the City of Hamilton require backflow testing?

Hamilton's backflow by-law covers industrial, commercial and institutional properties, and apartment buildings four storeys or higher. Their backflow devices have to be tested every year by a certified tester, and the report goes to the city within 14 days. Most houses aren't covered. We do the test and file the report for you.

My furnace is blowing cold air. What should I check first?

Check that the thermostat is set to heat and that its batteries aren't dead. Then look at the furnace filter, because a clogged one can make the furnace shut itself off. Make sure the switch beside the furnace, which looks like a light switch, is on. If it still won't heat after that, call us and we'll go through it with you on the phone.
